The Bridge School first came into being in 2002. It was a merger of two former schools. Harborough School which catered for pupils with autistic spectrum disorders aged 2-19 and Rosemary School which catered for pupils with severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties aged 2-19.
Rosemary School was located on two sites - a Primary site and a Secondary site. For five years The Bridge operated as one school but remained on three separate sites. It was only in 2007 that the old schools physically merged when we moved into our present accommodation.
The new buildings came about through an agreement with Islington Borough Council. The school build was not funded through either the Building Schools for the Future or Private Finance Initiative, as many new schools are. On the Primary site the school occupies two floors. There are three more floors and these are apartments, some of which are social housing. The Secondary site is a four story building with a central atrium feature.
Islington Borough Council funded the building of the school sites, however the school set to work to raise funding to provide the extras.
The Bridge has been fortunate and successful in recruiting support in this area and funding has been received from over 120 donors and sponsors.
The school had an outstanding OFSTED report in 2008 which recognises the excellent work of the school as a whole. Visit OFSTED website.
The Head Teacher who had overseen all the building work retired just before the pupils moved into the Secondary Site. A new Head Teacher, Penny Barratt, was appointed to take the school forward in its next phase of development.
